The UK state does too much, does lots of it badly and, in doing so, makes the country less healthy, less rich and less happy. Close down those ministries, agencies and regulators.
I would also like to nominate for the axe, the very many charities that rely almost entirely on taxpayer largesse, and who in many cases seem to use that money in a way directly detrimental to taxpayer interests.
DCMS was/is a rebranding of the Department of National Heritage which John Major established in 1992. That in turn took as its core the Office of Arts and Libraries, headed by a Minister for the Arts, and amalgamated various functions from across Whitehall, like historic buildings, national heritage and the Sports Council from the Department of the Environment, historic transport records from the Department of Education and Science, the film industry from the Department of Trade and Industry, tourism from the Department of Employment and broadcasting from the Home Office. It was as much a streamlining exercise as anything else.
